FARGO — It was Aug. 19, 2022, when the West Fargo Horace football team stepped on a varsity field for the very first time. Now, the Hawks are state champions.
Horace made the most of its Dakota Bowl debut Friday, topping Grand Forks Red River 14-8 at the Fargodome to claim the Division 2A state championship. In just their third varsity season, the Hawks claimed their first state title in program history. Ty Geray's 49-yard touchdown scamper on the second play from scrimmage, coupled with a 50-yard pick-six from Israel Bauer in the second quarter was all the scoring the Hawks needed Friday.
Red River made it a game late when Roughriders quarterback Pearce Parks found running back Noah Brandvold for a 3-yard touchdown reception with 2:47 left to make it 14-8 following the 2-point conversion. The Roughriders got the ball back immediately following an onside kick attempt when Horace fumbled, giving Red River a shot to tie the game with 2:40 remaining. On the next play, however, Horace's Axel Anderson intercepted Parks to get the ball back again.
The Hawks, the East No. 2 seed, finished their season 10-2. The Roughriders, the top seed from the East, finish 11-1 after playing in their first state title game since 1987.
