CLAYSVILLE — McGuffey found its offense in Friday’s Class 3A Western Hills Conference game against Hopewell, but its defense had trouble stopping the Vikings, who went on for a 56-24 victory. The Highlanders (0-4, 0-6) had a 7-0 lead after the first quarter following Matt Furmanek’s 18-yard touchdown run and Nate Kler’s PAT. Hopewell (2-2, 4-3) outscored the home team, 28-3, in the second quarter for a 28-10 halftime advantage.

Kler kicked a 35-yard field goal to give McGuffey some hope heading into the second half. Logan Carlisle scored back-to-back touchdowns for the Highlanders on runs of 37 and 18 before, and Kler made both extra points to pull McGuffey within 11 heading into the fourth quarter. Carlisle gained 108 yards rushing on 9 attempts.
