This is an opinion column As we approach Veterans Day, a day of remembrance and respect, it’s essential not only to honor the sacrifices of those who served but to consider how we, as a community, can support their journey forward. Our veterans carry the weight of service long after the battles are over, and our support can be instrumental in helping them reclaim their lives. At Bullets and Bandaids, we’ve seen firsthand how art can be a profound tool for healing.

Through collaborative projects, veterans share their experiences, tapping into emotions and memories that can be hard to express in words. Art offers a voice when words falter, providing a pathway to process trauma, create understanding and foster resilience. Community involvement deepens this healing process.

By engaging with veterans' stories, both visually and verbally, our society takes steps toward bridging the divide between military and civilian life. Through our “Talk Back” sessions, we bring veterans and civilians together to discuss the experiences behind the artwork, opening a door to empathy, understanding and shared humanity. This Veterans Day, let’s reflect on how we can play a role in supporting veterans’ healing journeys.

Whether it’s volunteering, attending events that amplify veterans' voices or simply listening, we each have a way to make a meaningful impact. Our veterans served us; now it’s our turn to serve them. By standing with our veterans, we create a community that not only honors their service but supports their well-being and future.

This Veterans Day, let’s celebrate their courage by actively contributing to their path forward..
