New Delhi: Barely two years after making a comeback to the Indian market, Chinese smartphone brand Honor faces a maze of challenges. The brand-licensed to HonorTech Universal-has been unable to launch new smartphones in India as its operations are stalled for the past six months, forcing mass layoffs. The company, which was aiming to touch 5% market share by 2024-end-blamed the current crisis mainly on difficulties in importing fully-built smartphones from China and visa denials for its Chinese executives.
In addition, digital marketing agency Adglobal360 dragged the company to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for unpaid dues of over ₹2.65 crore. HonorTech has disputed the claim.
Advt HonorTech CEO Madhav Sheth told ET that the company's operations have been stalled due to its inability to secure Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifications for new smartphone models since July 2024. "The government has an issue when importing CBUs, which is why we have been unable to secure any BIS certification in the last six months which has impacted operations in the short term," Sheth said.
