Hong Kong Olympian Ian Ho Yentou said he wanted to have another crack at a city record in his favourite event at this summer’s World Aquatics Championships, after racking up a first win of the new season on Sunday. Ho, who finished second in the men’s 50 metres butterfly at the Long Course Time Trial on Saturday, qualified for the 50m freestyle final as the fastest overall swimmer after an easy swim – in 22.23 seconds – in the morning.
There was no challenge in the afternoon, as Ho turned in another dominant performance to lead from the start before touching the wall first in 22.15. “This is maybe actually a little faster than I thought I was going to be,” he said.
“22.1 for the first meet back, my best time [was] only 21.8, so, within a quarter of a second of my best time is good.
“I’m not tapered for this meet either, so I’m still training hard and I just got back on Friday, so this is nice.” Ng Chi-hin (23.42) and Wong Lok-kan (23.
52) rounded out the podium at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, but both swimmers were a distant second behind the city’s record holder..
