The Hong Kong Observatory issued a red rainstorm signal on Saturday and warned of potentially serious flooding and traffic congestion along local roads. The upgrade came just 20 minutes after the forecaster issued an amber rainstorm alert at 11.45am, with the new signal meaning hourly heavy rain exceeding 50mm has fallen or is expected to fall.

The Observatory said the weather was due to an area of low pressure moving across the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta, resulting in an intense rainband. It added that it would monitor the situation and consider if a black rainstorm warning was necessary. It added that a black rainstorm warning could be issued if deemed necessary. “Further heavy rain could cause, if it has not already caused, serious road flooding and traffic congestion and could disrupt normal school hours,” it said..
