Hong Kong new technology hub gets go-ahead despite judicial review challenge

Civil Engineering and Development Department says it has started inviting tenders for site formation hours after Exco approval was obtained.

Hong Kong authorities have said they will press ahead with developing a technology hub near the mainland Chinese border after getting the green light from the city’s top decision-making body, despite an environmental judicial review challenge. The Development Bureau made the announcement on Friday, with planning authorities making some zoning changes in relation to San Tin Technopole to address public concerns. The bureau said it would seek funding from lawmakers in phases in order to allow more time for a section set to include a wetland conservation park.

The Civil Engineering and Development Department said it had already started inviting tenders for site formation for the project’s first phase, hours after the bureau said it had obtained the Executive Council’s approval for the project’s outline zoning plan. “With the completion of the statutory planning process, the government will press ahead with the San Tin Technopole and related projects,” a bureau spokesman said..
