Holmes Theatre to host inaugural variety show on Nov. 14

Fifteen talented local acts are scheduled to take the stage next Thursday; come early to watch the theater's youth acting club perform an original play at 6:45 p.m.

DETROIT LAKES — Some "legendary" local talent has been lined up for the Historic Holmes Theatre's first-ever variety show, the Lakes Legends Talent Night, on Thursday, Nov. 14. Fifteen talented acts, ranging from a 9-year-old fiddler to an 80-year-old comedienne, are scheduled to take the stage starting at 7 p.

m. — and for those who show up a little early, there will be an extra treat. ADVERTISEMENT "The students in our after-school acting club have created a play that they'll be doing before the big show, at 6:45 p.



m.," says Lorraine Bahr, director of the Holmes' community theater programs. "It's about 9-10 minutes long.

" Those who attend the show will have a chance to witness "an inspiring celebration of the wealth of creative talent we have in our community," she added. "There's some acting, some comedy, some music — both vocal and instrumental," said Bahr. "We have both soloists and groups, playing a wide range of music.

" All of the material in the show is "rated PG-13," she added, so parents are welcome to bring the kids for some family-friendly fun. For instance, she added, there is a bluegrass group, and a young musician "playing (on piano) and singing an original song that she wrote." Tickets for the variety show are $12 for adults and $10 for students.

14 also marks the opening day of the Holmes Theatre's 21st Annual Art Show, which will get underway at 4 p.m. in the Midwest Bank Ballroom — conveniently located across the hallway from the main theater, on the building's second floor.

So anyone who wants to check out the work of more than 30 regional artists is welcome to stop by the ballroom before the curtain rises that night. The art show will continue on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, from 10 a.

m. to 7:30 p.m.
