Hockey roundup: State-ranked Mound-Westonka handles Willmar

Prep hockey report from west central Minnesota for Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. White Hawks, No. 10 in Class A, beats visiting Cardinals 5-1

MOUND — The Willmar girls hockey team fell to Mound-Westonka/Southwest Christian 5-1 on Saturday at Thaler Hockey Arena. MW/SWC is ranked 10th in the state Class A poll by Let’s Play Hockey. The White Hawks out-shot Willmar 49-14, with Erin Eilers making 44 saves for the Cardinals.

Willmar took an early 1-0 lead. Lauren Eilers scored with an assist from Abigail Powers at the 9-minute, 50-second mark of the first period to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. But MW/SWC got two goals in the first period, added two more in the second and added another in the third.



Willmar plays the St. Cloud Crush in a Central Lakes Conference game at 7 p.m.

Thursday at the Willmar Civic Center Ice Arena. Girls MW/SWC 5, Willmar 1 Worthington 2, MBA 0 Macie Mahlberg stopped five shots to earn the shutout in net in a victory over Morris/Benson Area at the Worthington Hockey Arena. Sydnie Van Briesen and Beretta Johnson scored goals for the Trojans.

MBA’s next game is at 2 p.m. Saturday against Fort Frances, Ontario, at the Lee Community Center in Morris.

Boys MBA 4, Worthington 3 The Morris/Benson Area storm got an overtime goal from Gavin Meyer to earn the non-conference victory at Worthington. Meyer’s goal was assisted by Connor Hadfield. Bryce Lehman, Zachary Wrobleski and Gustav Holm also had goals for MBA.

Gavin Schmidt made 31 saves in goal for the Storm, who were out-shot 34-29. Willmar plays MBA at 7 p.m.
