HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) announced on January 22 that it has successfully delivered the first 7,700 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel container ship to its owner. The ship was built at the Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, demonstrating its eco-friendly shipbuilding capabilities once again. The delivered vessel is the first of two ships ordered in 2022 by a European shipping company.
An official delivery signing ceremony was held on the 20th at the Yeongdo Shipyard, attended by representatives from the ship's owner and HJ Shipbuilding. The ship measures 272 meters in length and can sail at a speed of 22 knots. It features the latest technology and eco-friendly design, including a dual-fuel propulsion system that runs on LNG.
Especially, it uses the Mark III membrane-type fuel tank from France's GTT, providing a large storage capacity of 6,100 cubic meters and maximizing container load capacity. The vessel is designed to meet the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) regulations on sulfur oxide and carbon dioxide emissions. HJSC highlighted that there are only a few shipyards worldwide capable of designing and building LNG dual-fuel ships, and this successful construction has reinforced its reputation for world-class technology.
Additionally, the delivery of this ship reaffirms its competitiveness in the eco-friendly container ship sector. Following the successful delivery of six 5,500 TEU methanol-ready container ships, the delivery of this first 7,700 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel container ship further strengthens HJ Shipbuilding's position in the eco-friendly ship market. When the second vessel and a total of eight 7,900 TEU container ships are completed, it is expected that mass production effects will significantly improve productivity and profitability.
"The delivery of our first 7,700 TEU-class LNG DF container ship allows us to accelerate follow-up construction and aggressive marketing activities," said HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol. "We will continue to develop and build eco-friendly, high-value ships to provide solutions suitable for the era of decarbonization." After the delivery of this ship, HJSC plans to complete and deliver the second vessel currently under construction in sequence to the ship's owner.
