A programme of repairs to the road surface in a cathedral city has been planned to avoid disruption to Remembrance Day and Christmas events. North Yorkshire Council said it would spend £630,000 on resurfacing streets around Ripon's market place. The first phase, due to start on Monday, would focus on the eastern side of the square to allow the Christmas lights switch-on and Armistice parade to go ahead.
The council said it had worked with local businesses and councillors to agree on the timing for the project. Concrete blocks on roads around the market place will be replaced with an asphalt surface, though they will be retained in areas such as the taxi rank. Businesses, drivers and visitors have been warned that a full road closure will be in place around the eastern area.
Access will be maintained to the west of the market place, including the car park. Councillor Andrew Williams, who represents Ripon Minster and Moorside, said: "It has long been recognised that these roads needed to be repaired. "There would never be a perfect time to undertake a scheme of this magnitude and the sooner it is started the sooner it will be completed.
" The second phase of the scheme will begin in early 2025 and cover the remainder of the market square as well as Kirkgate and Duckhill. All work is expected to be finished by the spring. The council's executive member for highways and transport, Keane Duncan, said: “Some archaeological finds have been made in the vicinity when past works were carried out, so we will ensure the site is monitored carefully throughout the scheme.
" “We will of course keep the public, city council, businesses and local councillors updated as we progress." A signed diversion will be in place throughout the works and access for pedestrians will remain..
