1 2 3 Pune: The court of judicial magistrate first class V N Khandare on Saturday sent Janardan Hambardi (55), the driver of a staff minibus for Vyoma Graphics in Hinjewadi, to magisterial custody till April 11. Hambardi was arrested for allegedly setting the vehicle on fire on March 19, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives and injuring six others. He has been transferred to the Yerawada Central Prison.
Assistant public prosecutor Vijaysinh Gaikwad said the court considered the Hinjewadi police's plea to reserve its right to seek custodial remand of Hambardikar as and when required for the purpose of investigations under the sections of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Gaikwad said inspector Rushikesh Ghadge produced the accused before the court after the end of his initial custodial remand. Ghadge submitted to send him in magisterial custodial remand for 14 days because he completed investigations in the case, barring receiving forensic expert reports and recording statements of witnesses.
The court considered the police plea and allowed the accused to take medicines in jail because he was under medical treatment for injuries suffered in the fire incident. Ghadge's remand report read that the accused, during custodial interrogation, told police that he stole the highly inflammable chemical (normally used in printing press) in a five-litre can a day before the bus fire incident. On March 19 morning, he sprinkled the chemical on the two cloth pieces before setting them ablaze.
The resultant flames also caught the lower parts of his trousers. The Hinjewadi police said Hambardikar confessed to setting the minibus on fire as he was upset over not getting as much salary or bonus as other company staffers during Diwali. He also nursed a grudge against some employees, regular travellers, for asking him to work beyond his driving job and not letting him have his 9am breakfast on time, considering that he was diabetic.
