CHENNAI: Members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi staged a protest near Dams Road off Anna Salai on Thursday, demanding the Indian Cricket Council (ICC) call off the India-Bangladesh test match being conducted at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. They demanded that Hindus were being targeted in Bangladesh and that many Hindus were brutally attacked and killed.

This had been happening since the former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on 5 August last month after the fallout of student protests and violence erupted all over the country to dethrone Hasina. Despite the protest leaders and the Bangladesh president Mohammad Shahabuddin appointing a Nobel laureate, Mohammad Yunus, to lead the interim govt, the attack on Hindus continued, alleged the Hindu Makkal Katchi office-bearers who participated in the protest. While the city police refused to assign a venue to stage the protest close to the stadium, the protesters gathered near Dams Road.

The agitators, led by the Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath , raised slogans against Bangladesh. Due to this, traffic was diverted on Anna Salai close to Bata point. To avoid the protesters marching towards the stadium, a huge posse of police personnel was deployed, and the cops kept barricades around the agitators to prevent them from leaving the venue.
