A "highly intoxicated" man bent a police officer's thumb back while he was trying to arrest him. Humdaan Ghanchi, 29, was under the influence of alcohol at 7am on March 26, 2022 when he assaulted the policeman. Ghanchi had called paramedics to his street, Rutherglen Drive in Ladybridge , to assist a person who was allegedly suffering a cardiac arrest.

Bolton Crown Court heard how police attended to assist North West Ambulance Service and that when they arrived, the defendant could be seen to be "unsteady". Prosecuting, Hannah Forsyth said: "Close to the end of the garden, the defendant was unsteady on his feet and mentioned that someone was dead on the floor - but the male suffering health difficulties was stood in front of the officers. "Officers attempted to reason with the defendant and he raised his arms.

"A police officer tried to push him in the centre of his chest to change his behaviour, but the defendant's conduct became more aggressive, he could be seen clenching fists and became verbally combative. "His mother came out of their address and tried to bring him inside and became verbally abusive to her." A policeman informed Ghanchi that he was under arrest for being drunk and disorderly.

However, he was "extremely physically resistant" to the arrest. "The officer yanked his thumb from the defendant's grip.

It caused pain that continued until around three hours later." When he was taken to custody, Ghanchi called two police officers, including the one whose thumb he had bent back, an abusive name. The officer who was attacked described his behaviour as "despicable".

Ghanchi pleaded guilty to the offence of assaulting an emergency worker. He has two previous convictions for five offences, including one which was very similar, where he bent the finger of a police officer back while "intoxicated". Defending, Andrew Gurney said: "It is quite clear from the pre-sentence report that alcohol contributes towards previous criminality.

"The defendant knows it is an issue, which is why he has sought to treat it of his own volition." Mr Gurney highlighted that Ghanchi has established a successful business selling natural supplements online since committing this offence. He said he is also in the process of buying his own home and is due to get married in the next three months.

Mr Gurney added: "The body-worn footage shows him to be highly intoxicated and he does not act appropriately." Concluding, Recorder Imran Shafi KC said: "The pre-sentence report says that you have not accepted responsibility and have shown no remorse and have blamed police. "It seems to me that the custody threshold has been passed, given your frankly disgraceful, drunken and boorish behaviour.

" Recorder Shafi sentenced Gurney to 12 weeks imprisonment..
