The New Castle High boys basketball team held on for a win Tuesday night. The Red Hurricane fed off a strong first quarter en route to a 54-49 win over host Woodland Hills in a WPIAL Section 1-6A matchup. Kai Cox, a freshman, chipped in 11 of his game-high 25 points in the first quarter to give New Castle (2-0 section, 6-0 overall) a 20-6 lead heading into the second.

The ‘Canes outscored Woodland Hills by one point in the second quarter, 11-10. The Wolverines (0-2, 3-3) netted 15 points to New Castle’s 10 in the third to enter the final quarter trailing 41-31. Woodland Hills outscored New Castle again in the fourth quarter, 18-13, but to no avail.



Butler hosts New Castle at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

NESHANNOCK 60, SHENANGO 46 The Wildcats started out strong but Neshannock responded to claim a WPIAL Section 4-2A victory. Shenango posted a 22-16 advantage over the Lancers at the end of the first quarter. Neshannock’s defense responded in the second quarter to hold Shenango to four points while they netted 11 to enter halftime with a 27-26 lead.

Tony Perrotta, a forward for the Lancers (2-0, 5-0), recorded 15 points and six rebounds to lead his team. Shenango’s Joe Campoli netted a game-high 19 points. Trips to the foul line benefited Neshannock.

The Lancers were 17 of 25 from the charity stripe while Shenango (1-1, 2-4) only made nine of 11. In the third quarter, Neshannock outscored the Wildcats, 18-10. Neshannock posted 15 points to Shenango’s 10 in the final quarter to capture the win.

Shenango hosts Laurel while Neshannock travels to Rochester on Friday. Both of those games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m.

start. WILMINGTON 53, PORTERSVILLE CHRISTIAN 42 The Greyhounds continued their winning ways with a nonregion win. Wilmington (4-0) and Portersville Christian ended the first quarter knotted at seven.

The Greyhounds outscored Portersville Christian by four points in the second to enter halftime with a 21-17 lead. Wesley Vass-Gal paced Wilmington with 18 points. Wilmington’s offense had a better second half.

In the third and fourth quarters combined, Wilmington scored 32 points to Portersville Christian’s 25. Wilmington hosts West Middlesex at 7:30 p.m.

on Friday. ELLWOOD CITY 35, RIVERSIDE 32 The Wolverines eked out a WPIAL Section 1-3A win. Riverside and Ellwood City Lincoln (2-0, 5-3) posted six points apiece in the first quarter.

Riverside netted nine points to the Wolverines’ five to enter halftime with a 15-11 lead. Aaron Lake led the Ellwood City with 12 points. In the third quarter, the Panthers (0-2, 5-2) outscored Ellwood City again, 10-8.

Ellwood City managed to turn things around in the fourth quarter and post 16 points to Riverside’s seven to win the game. Riverside’s Logan Young recorded a game-high 13 points. New Brighton hosts Ellwood City at 7:30 p.

m. Friday. Girls NEW CASTLE 52, BETH-CENTER 15 The Lady ‘Canes snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing nonsection home win over the Lady Bulldogs.

27 when it entertains Ambridge at 7:30 p.m. UNION 52, FREEDOM 36 The Lady Scots started strong and cruised to a nonsection road win over the Lady Bulldogs.

Union (6-0) led 17-7 after one quarter and 25-15 at the half. Kylie Fruehstorfer netted a game-high 22 points for Union and Hayden Strickler was next with eight. Strickler snared 10 rebounds and Fruehstorfer handed out six assists.

Mia Preuhs and Olivia Benedict pulled down eight boards apiece for the winners. Mackenzie Mohrbacher tallied nine points for Freedom (1-4). Union is back in action at 4:30 p.

m. Thursday at Sewickley Academy. UNION 58, WESTERN BEAVER 31 Lucas Stanley netted a game-best 30 points to pace the Scotties to a Section 4-2A road win over the Golden Beavers.

Union (2-0, 7-0) built a 21-7 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 41-14 at the half. Landon Eckert contributed 10 markers and five assists for the Scotties. Jordyn Kelley recorded eight rebounds for Union and Jamel Mitchell was next with seven.

Western Beaver is now 0-2, 1-5. Union is back on the court at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday against visiting Mohawk. MOHAWK 72, NEW BRIGHTON 31 The Warriors breezed to a Section 1-3A home win over the Lions. Mohawk raced to a 30-8 lead after one period and increased the advantage to 45-20 at the break.

Joey Nail paced three Warriors in double figures with 15 markers. Bobby Fadden followed with 13 tallies and Vinny Pezzuolo posted 12. Isaac Kohlmeyer collected six points for New Brighton.

Mohawk travels to Union at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART 56, LAUREL 26 The Spartans dropped a Section 4-2A home contest to the Chargers. Laurel (0-1, 4-3) trailed 20-5 after one quarter and 29-15 at recess. Seth Gilmore garnered 12 points for the Spartans.

Luca Grisefi tossed in 14 markers for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (1-1, 5-1). Laurel visits Shenango at 7:30 p.m.
