Staff report SALISBURY — Salisbury’s girls basketball team welcomed an old rival to “The Hive” on Monday night and gave North Davidson a 63-28 flogging. The Hornets decided the game in the second quarter by overwhelming North Davidson 27-5 with one of their best quarters of the season on both ends of the floor. The final was 63-28.

North Davidson led 8-2 early, but the Hornets led 11-10 by the end of the quarter and destroyed the Black Knights (5-16) in the second quarter. After that devastating quarter filled with transition buckets, the second half was all mop-up duty. The keys to that second-quarter frenzy were Jaliyah McNeely, Gabbi Fatovic and Janiyah Fomond.

That trio accounted for 20 points in the quarter. McNeely turned in a career game. Fatovic and Fomond both had their best scoring game in weeks.

McNeely, Fatovic and Torese Evans finished with 13 points each. Evans was the one who got the Hornets untracked after a shaky start with three buckets in the first quarter. She surpassed 500 points for her career.

Fomond scored 10. Salisbury (12-8) is 23rd in the 2A West RPI rankings, so even in a rebuilding season the Hornets aren’t going to have any trouble making the state playoffs. Coach Lakai Brice logged her 221st win at the helm of the Hornets.
