ROUND ROCK — East Texas’ distance runners enjoyed plenty of success at the 2024 UIL cross country state meet at Old Settlers Park this past week as Elysian Fields’ junior Cara Sims won the Class 2A state championship and other Harrison County runners competed as well. Sims topped the entire Class 2A field and earned her first career state championship on Friday by running a 11:34.6 time.
“We’re very excited,” said Elysian Fields cross country coach Jana Sims. “We’re very proud. Itz was a lot of fun.
” “She was ready,” she continued. “She was mentally ready. What I attribute her success to is her relentless commitment to doing her workouts the way that they are written and need to be done.
She’s [also] committed to the details outside of practice. She’s very consistent on her nutrition and sleep needs. She does whatever needs to be done.
” Harleton’s Lindsay Ipock competed as a Class 2A girls individual. She finished 106th with a time of 14:00.6.
Waskom’s Victor Bravo (17:03.1) led the charge with an eighth-place finish. Other area representatives included Elysian Fields’ Sage Stoute (18:32.
5) in 78th, and Harleton’s Braedon Glennen Lovvorn (19:47.9) in 112th. Hallsville senior Kylea Hatfield placed 63rd at 19:54.
20 and teammate Addison Hatchett finished No. 126 (21:24.20).
