High school basketball: Undefeated McGuffey routs Carlynton

McGuffey improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Class 3A Section 2. The Highlanders led 23-6 after one quarter and moved out to a 41-14 halftime advantage.

Sam Stout scored 10 points for the Highlanders. Devonte Dean’s 10 points led Carlynton (0-1, 3-3). Charleroi 70, California 49 Brock Henderson scored a game-high 18 points, Amaru Staub came off the bench to contribute a double-double and Charleroi scored 49 points in the first half en route to a 70-49 victory over visiting California in a nonsection game.



Charleroi (4-3) raced out to a 49-29 lead at halftime. Staub scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Shae Smith scored 15 points for the Cougars and Jackson Kernako gave Charleroi four players in double figures as he finished with 10.

Jacob Ziolecki paced California (1-4) with 14 points and Caden Monticelli had 10. Monessen 70, Brownsville 36 TyVaughn Kershaw led three Monessen players in double figures and the Greyhounds broke open a close game in the second half and beat Westinghouse of the City League, 70-36. Monessen (3-1) led by only 22-18 at halftime before outscoring the Bulldogs 20-7 in the third quarter and 28-11 in the fourth.

Rodney Johnson added 15 points for Monessen and Dennis Hopkins had 12. Darron Taylor was the leading scorer for Westinghouse (0-4) with nine points. Girls results West Greene 41, Mapletown 23 Nine different West Greene players were in the scoring column as the Pioneers defeated Mapletown 41-23 in a Class A Section 2 game in Rogersville.

West Greene (1-1, 5-1) held Mapletown to 13 points through three quarters. The Pioneers didn’t have a player score in double figures as Madelyn Roberts led the way with nine points. Makenna Lotspeich scored a game-high 11 points for Mapletown (0-2, 2-5).

Belle Vernon 46, Yough 32 Belle Vernon pulled away in the fourth quarter and defeated Yough 46-32 in Class 4A Section 3. The Leopards (2-0, 4-3) led 19-16 at halftime and 31-26 after three quarters, then won the game with a 15-6 scoring edge over the final eight minutes. Aubrey Brown scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Leopards.

Abby Russell finished with 10 points. Daisy Miller scored 11 points for Yough (1-1, 4-3). Keystone Oaks 57, McGuffey 24 Keystone Oaks scored 40 points in the first half and went on to a 57-24 victory over McGuffey in Class 3A Section 3.

KO (1-1, 4-1) received 23 points from Lainey Wagner and Nina DeWeese added 15. The Golden Eagles led 40-14 at halftime. Lexi Ewig tossed in 10 points for McGuffey (0-1, 4-2).

Fort Cherry 63, Carmichaels 9 Brooke Cornali scored points, Jazlyn Martino added 15 and Fort Cherry moved above the .500 mark for the season with a 63-9 victory over visiting Carmichaels in nonsection play. Fort Cherry improved to 3-2.

The Rangers led 40-4 at halftime. South Side Beaver 54, Bentworth 24 Bailey Strinisa scored 18 points and Eden Sohrier added 15 as South Side Beaver defeated visiting Bentworth 54-24 in a nonsection contest. Aubrie Logan led Bentworth (2-4) with eight points.
