Manchester United drew 2-2 with Lyon on Thursday night, but Ruben Amorim was left to rue a late error from Andre Onana.Manchester United’s Europa League hopes are certainly still alive, but Thursday’s trip to Lyon has the feeling of a missed opportunity.Ruben Amorim took his team to France for the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon.
United drew 2-2 with Lyon but were leading heading into injury time after Joshua Zirkzee had headed Amorim’s side in front.Andre Onana couldn’t keep hold of a late shot, though, and Rayan Cherki was on hand to score the rebound.United only leave with a draw when it could have been a one-goal lead, but Amorim will hope to finish off the job at Old Trafford.

However, United legend Paul Scholes told TNT Sports that he doesn’t think Amorim actually believes the words he is saying.Scholes suggested that Amorim doesn’t actually like his United squad and knows that his players just aren’t good enough.Scholes feels United need much better players for Amorim this summer, pointing to the United boss looking ‘disappointed’ on the sidelines.
“I don’t think he believes that, to be honest with you,” said Scholes. “I don’t think he likes his team, to be honest with you. I think he knows he hasn’t got a great football team.
I think he wants better, he needs better.“I think you can see that from the way he is on the touchline, he always looks disappointed to me. The way he’s speaking there tells me he’s disappointed with what he’s got, and he needs better.
“Everyone knows he needs better if he’s going to challenge and be where Manchester United want to be. I think it’s all over the pitch.“He knows, he’s not stupid.
He’s never going to say it, but he doesn’t like this football team – that’s something I take away from that. I might be wrong, I don’t know, but the impression I get is this team is nowhere near the standard that he wants and he expects,” he added.“I don’t think he likes his team to be honest.

Scholes does, though, see one boost for Amorim, believing that United have improved defensively.Scholes suggested that United look ‘quite tight’ and ‘quite solid’, but it may be at the expense of attacking quality.“I think he can be quite pleased defensively.
I think they look quite tight, quite solid,” said Scholes. “But that’s taken away that real goal threat that they should have,” said Scholes.United have been a mess defensively in the past, so Amorim can at least take some heart from that improvement.
Onana’s mistakes cost United two goals, but Amorim will hope to build on some defensive development alongside improved attacking play in the future..
