Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has announced that the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric results will be released during the second week of January. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is finalising preparations to ensure a smooth conclusion to this year’s matric examination process. Matric results are expected on 13 January 2025 During a media briefing, Gwarube revealed that the official release date for the matric results is set for 13 January 2025 , with provincial education departments expected to release them the following day.

The minister emphasised the department’s commitment to accuracy and fairness. “The department has set up 181 marking centres across the country, all of which have been audited and deemed ready. Over 50 000 markers will ensure the integrity of the marking process,” Gwarube said.

She added that 60 of the planned 164 Marking Standardisation Meetings had already taken place to finalise guidelines. Concerns over publication of results The Information Regulator (IR) has directed the DBE to halt publishing matric results in newspapers , citing non-compliance with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act. The IR issued an enforcement notice to prevent the public release of personal data.

Despite this, the DBE maintains that publishing results in newspapers does not breach privacy laws and provides an accessible option for learners. Minister Gwarube defended the practice, stating that printing results in newspapers is not an invasion of privacy. Instead, it ensures that pupils can easily access their achievements.

The department plans to challenge the enforcement notice, as discussions around the POPI Act and its implications for public education data continue. With the exams officially concluded, Gwarube also cautioned matriculants against reckless celebrations during “pens down” and matric rage events. “The end of exams is a time for celebration, but it must be done responsibly.

I urge matriculants to avoid alcohol abuse and prioritise their safety,” she said. The minister reminded students that their hard work deserves to be celebrated in ways that reflect their achievements, not risk their well-being.
