MCDONOUGH — The Atlanta Speedway Airport runway is getting upgraded after a Henry County Board of Commissioners vote Tuesday, March 11. At its March 11 meeting, commissioners unanimously approved contracts to repave the runaway into a grooved runway. The contracts include a $2.

146 million contract with C.W. Matthews Contracting; a contract of more than $102,000 with Croy Engineering for construction inspection, administration and testing; and a $3 million Georgia Department of Transportation Limited Participation Contract.

The GDOT contract required a local $1 million match, using Capital Improvement Plan funds. Construction and engineering services for the project are eligible for state reimbursement. “This project will have a positive economic impact on the airport,” Henry County Capital Projects Director Lynn Planchon said.

She explained that having a grooved runway will help NASCAR teams that fly into the local airport because they are required to come in on a grooved runaway if it’s raining or if the runway is wet. She said the closest grooved runaway is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Commissioner Johnny Wilson said the paving project is “much needed.
