Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren on Sunday met the state’s Governor, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, and formally staked his claim to form the next government in Jharkhand. The move came shortly after Soren was unanimously elected as the legislature party leader by the INDIA alliance in the state. Soren resigned as the Chief Minister before presenting his claim to form the government, as confirmed by party leaders.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the Governor, PTI quoted Soren as saying, “I have staked my claim to form the government and submitted the support letters from our alliance partners to the Governor. He has invited us to form the government, and the swearing-in ceremony will take place on November 28.” Soren's JMM-led alliance achieved a remarkable victory in the Jharkhand Assembly elections, securing 56 seats in the 81-member assembly.

This victory ensured the JMM-led coalition's second consecutive term in power, despite a strong challenge from the BJP-led NDA, which only managed to win 24 seats. The majority mark in the assembly is 41 seats. Soren’s alliance includes the Congress, which secured 16 seats, the RJD with 4, and CPI-ML, which won 2 seats.

The BJP won 21 seats, while its allies AJSU, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and JD-U won one seat each. Additionally, Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) won a seat, with party chief Jairam Kumar Mahato securing the Dumri seat. The assembly elections were held in two phases, on November 13 and 20, 2024.

The JMM-led alliance’s victory has been hailed as a resounding mandate, as the party managed to retain power in the state, which was formed in 2000 following its separation from Bihar. Commenting on the victory, Congress leader Rajesh Thakur remarked, “The people of Jharkhand have sidelined the BJP. In a democracy, the public’s mandate is supreme, and we have been entrusted with the responsibility to govern.

” Thakur stressed that the alliance would focus on the welfare of the people and work for the development of the state. In his victory speech, Hemant Soren expressed his satisfaction with the results, saying, “Today’s results reflect the will of the people of Jharkhand. I thank all communities, farmers, women, and youth for casting their votes and making this election a success.

We are committed to building a ‘Golden Jharkhand’ for the future.” Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Elections and around the world..
