MANILA, Philippines – This year, Filipinos have seen the harmful impacts of climate change, ranging from extreme heat to flooding . What can we do to urge government agencies to come up with long-term solutions to these problems? How can we make Philippine cities better prepared for the climate crisis? As part of Rappler’s Social Good Summit 2024 , policymakers and frontliners in national and local government, as well as experts and advocates of disaster response and climate adaptation, will come together in a session to discuss challenges in disaster preparedness and how we can raise climate resiliency as a key issue for the 2025 elections. You can join this breakout session during the summit, from 2 pm to 4 pm , October 19, 2024, Saturday, at the Pardo Hall of De La Salle University Manila .
The session, entitled, “ How can we make cities climate-resilient? Building sustainable urban centers that can withstand climate change ,” is organized with Project Agos partners in the government, and Make Manila Liveable , a collaboration of journalists and communities aiming to improve quality of life in Philippine cities. It will take place simultaneously with another breakout session organized by the anti-disinformation initiative #FactsFirstPH which will be about protecting truth tellers and information integrity amid elections. Using placemaking to envision climate-resilient communities The session will feature a panel discussion and a placemaking activity which attendees can participate in.
The panel discussion will tackle current challenges on climate impacts and how we can apply best practices from other cities. This will feature the following speakers: Raffy Alejandro – Deputy Administrator, Office of Civil Defense Alberto Kimpo – Assistant City Administrator for Operations, Quezon City Government Dr. Mahar Lagmay – Executive Director, UP Resilience Institute Elijah Go Tian – Co-founder, Placemaking Pilipinas This will then be followed by a placemaking activity where participants will be grouped to discuss and come up with an imaginary neighborhood grounded on climate resilience.
The outcome of this activity is a 10-point wishlist which Rappler will write about, use in our election coverage and campaigns, and relay to 2025 electoral candidates.
