Ludhiana: From now on, residents of various localities may directly contact the station house officers (SHOs) and other senior officials under a new initiative called Project Sampark . Ludhiana Police is forming mohalla- and ward-level police-public committees under this project to have direct communication. Deputy commissioner of police — City and Investigation — Shubham Agarwal said, “This project has been introduced by Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav with a vision for the police and public to have direct communication.

” As many as 120 committees have already been formed, while the process is on to constitute more such committees. Under the project, mohalla or ward-level committees are being formed comprising minimum seven and maximum 21 residents. The SHO will head the committee and will have regular meetings.

Some of the officials have also organised first meetings with the committee members. “The idea is: victims of different crimes hesitate to approach the police. These committee members will help them in getting connected to the concerned police officials,” Agarwal said.

Once these committees have regular meetings, the police, with the help of the public, will also manage to resolve their issues. “Recently, I had a meeting with the residents of a locality who had complained that at night, people consume alcohol in the open and create nuisance. The police acted on it and resolved the issue,” Agarwal said.

The DCP said the purpose of these committees is strictly linked to policing. At one such meeting, conducted by the Division Number 8 police, the residents of Mall Enclave shared the issues of theft and snatching. A resident told SHO inspector Balwinder Kaur that while major crimes get reported, petty crimes stay ignored.
