Fan favourite Amy Dowden has endured so much during her time on Strictly Come Dancing . The professional dancer, who joined the BBC competition in 2017, has Crohn's disease and recently battled breast cancer after finding a lump on her chest in May 2023. Following gruelling treatment, Amy, 34, was given the all-clear and returned to the dancefloor for the current series.
But TV chiefs had to make an urgent 999 call after she fell ill backstage on Saturday night. A representative for Amy said she was "feeling unwell" so an ambulance was called "as a precaution", and she is thankfully feeling "much better". Though, a source has claimed she may be forced to quit the show.
A source told The Sun: "Amy was obviously in huge distress. Everyone around her was equally upset because they felt so helpless. JB had to be given a hug.
Even the medic who first attended to Amy needed support and consolation. The only thing they could do was try to get her to hospital as quickly and safely as possible." The source suggested another professional could temporarily replace Amy if she doesn't feel up to it.
It wouldn't be the first time she has been forced to step down, as she was unable to dance last year during her cancer treatment. Strictly was a huge motivator for Amy to get better and it also made her question having chemotherapy. Sharing how difficult it was to make the decision, Amy previously told to The Mirror : "I thought that's Strictly with a partner wiped out, that's my hair gone, that's my life gone.
I was like, I don't want to do that [chemo]." She finally decided that chemo was right, after receiving some "tough love" from her former dance teacher. But sadly, her first and second cycles didn't go to plan, resulting in emergency hospital stays and life-threatening complications.
"They said my blood pressure was that low my vital organs would have started failing," Amy said. "We met the paramedics a week later and they said if I had gone to bed that night I might not have woken up the next morning." After having a mastectomy, completing her chemo, ringing the bell and being given the all-clear, Amy made her return to Strictly.
Sharing an emotional message on social media earlier this year, she wrote: "I'm so happy and grateful to be back on @bbcstrictly. MY HEART IS SO HAPPY." In an interview one year on from spotting her lump, Amy told BBC Breakfast: "I can't believe it's a year since I found the lump.
But I'm just so grateful in the year for the treatment I've had, the NHS , and all the charities, everybody that's helped me to be still here today. "I was actually at the oncology unit yesterday, having my monthly injection, which I will need for five years..
. But I'm just so grateful to get another shot at life. but I never thought in a million years at 32, that I'd be diagnosed with breast cancer.
.. I'm working really, really hard and getting my body fully back in rehab and physio, I've got a brilliant team.
" When asked who has supported her, Amy added: "I've got amazing friends and family. The oncology unit, the nurses, the breast nurses, and also the public support has been incredible. And I think the goal and the dream to be back on the dancefloor as well, because I've missed it so, so much.
