HealthLinc is expanding substance abuse recovery services into Newton County.

The Valparaiso-based nonprofit health center's Mobile Integrated Response Teams help people struggling with substance abuse by connecting them with peer support and resources needed to recover. Newton County suffers from 38 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people, more than the state average of 34 overdoses per 100,000.

The program partners with police, emergency medical services and community agencies to identify people who need help with substance abuse. It's led by certified peer support professionals who are in recovery themselves and can respond to opioid episodes. HealthLinc has Mobile Integrated Response Teams in Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Starke counties.
