The Ministry of Health will continue advocating for increased taxes on tobacco-related products, according to the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu. Dr.

Atonio emphasised the Government’s strong commitment to reducing the health and economic impacts of tobacco use through several key policies and initiatives aimed at tobacco control. “These measures include enforcing stricter regulations on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship, as well as implementing higher taxes on tobacco products to reduce consumption,” Dr Atonio said. “The Government has also been active in promoting awareness campaigns about the dangers of tobacco use, encouraging smoking cessation, and providing support for individuals who wish to quit smoking.

” Dr Atonio highlighted that the economic burden of tobacco use goes beyond healthcare costs, extending to lost productivity from premature deaths, absenteeism, and disability caused by tobacco- related illnesses. “This loss of workforce reduces economic output and limits the country’s potential for growth. “Fiji also faces substantial costs in terms of Government spending on treating tobacco-related diseases, which could be more effectively allocated to other development priorities such as education, infrastructure, and social welfare.

“There are also indirect costs associated with tobacco use, including the economic impact on families and communities, particularly when individuals are unable to work due to tobacco-related health problems.” He stressed reducing tobacco consumption is critical to improving public health outcomes, which in turn supports Fiji’s aspirations to provide quality healthcare and enhance the productivity of its workforce. “Efforts to reduce tobacco use will improve the quality of life for Fijians, particularly among vulnerable population groups, and help strengthen the social and economic fabric of the nation by fostering healthier and more productive communities.
