Health minister Ma Subramanian launches drug information centre at Chennai college

A drug information centre was inaugurated at Stanley Medical College and Hospital in Chennai. The centre, in collaboration with C L Baid Metha College of Pharmacy, will guide patients on medication usage and offer expert counsel. Medical equipment worth Rs. 1.1 crore and a modernised kitchen were also inaugurated. One mpox case has been detected in India.

CHENNAI: A drug information centre was inaugurated at the Stanley Medical College and Hospital by health minister Ma Subramanian on Monday. The centre, set up in collaboration with C L Baid Metha College of Pharmacy , will guide patients on the ideal administration, dosage, and usage of various medications . It will also offer expert counsel to patients regarding drugs and advise doctors on the appropriate handling of pharmaceuticals , he said.

The centre will serve as a dependable resource for patients seeking precise and trustworthy information about their prescribed medications. “The staff are trained to provide comprehensive explanations of drug uses, potential side effects, interactions, and optimal dosage,” he said. Additionally, the centre will strive to identify and monitor potential safety issues through the reporting of adverse drug reactions .



On Monday, medical equipment worth Rs. 50 lakh, procured from the CSR funds of MRF Limited, and additional medical equipment valued at Rs. 60 lakh were dedicated to the public.

A modernised kitchen, renovated at a cost of Rs. 75 lakh, was also inaugurated. The minister reviewed the construction of nursing and student hostels at the hospital.

Later, while addressing reporters, the minister confirmed that one case of mpox has been detected in India. “Although details about the patient are being withheld to maintain confidentiality, the centre has assured that the patient's health condition is stable,” he said. In Tamil Nadu, the govt has implemented screening procedures for patients and established testing and isolation facilities.

Tamil Nadu has been designated as one of the testing centres for mpox, showcasing the state's preparedness to handle such cases effectively..
