Ipswich Town are reportedly interested in Peterborough United rising star Kwame Poku. The 23-year-old winger has 17 goal involvements (10G, 7A) in 17 games this season following his hat-trick display in an League One derby match against Cambridge United last weekend. TBRfootball.
com reports that Ipswich, Southampton, Burnley, Millwall and Rangers are all showing interest in the one-cap Ghanaian international. Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony recently revealed on his 'Hard Truth' podcast that the club turned down an offer of £3m plus a further £3m in add-ons for the one-cap Ghanaian international back in the summer. The former Colchester United man is now in the final year of his contract at London Road.
"We did make him a club record (contract) offer, but he knows it’s time for him to go to the next level. We hope he wins promotion with us first," said MacAnthony. "Kwame probably won’t go to the Premier League straight away, but he will get a high-end Championship club.
He will be a Premier League star in the future and that next move will probably cost £30 million." Due to his age, Peterborough would receive a tribunal set transfer fee for Kwame should he walk away next summer. MacAnthony believes that will be 'millions and millions'.
Stu's verdict Posh have an incredible track record of developing young talent and Poku looks to be the next off their impressive production line. Ipswich have, of course, already got two players who have kicked on at London Road in their squad in the form of Jack Taylor and Sammie Szmodics. Quick and well-balanced, Poku is a left-footer who loves to cut in from the right and shoot.
He certainly ticks the 'versatile, hungry, athletic and technical' boxes that Kieran McKenna always has at the forefront of his mind when recruiting. Would the pathway be there at Portman Road though? It's clear that McKenna wants to develop Omari Hutchinson as a No.10 in the long run, but that still leaves Wes Burns and Chiedozie Ogbene as right-wing options.
Burns signed a new two-year deal in September, while McKenna has said that he still hopes to see the best of Ogbene over 'the next few years' after the £8m summer signing from Luton recently suffered a season-ending Achilles injury..
