Mohammed Shami was left out of the squad due to his ongoing recovery from an ankle injury, having only recently resumed bowling in the nets.
Harshit Rana’s inclusion was somewhat unexpected, as the KKR fast bowler has yet to make his international debut despite being previously called up to the T20I and ODI squads. With Shami’s absence from the squad, a spot became available, and Harshit Rana successfully impressed the Indian management despite his lack of international experience. It has now come to light that Rana’s selection received strong support from none other than current Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Having observed Rana closely during his mentorship at KKR, Gambhir played a key role in his selection. According to a BCCI source, Rana’s explosive pace and youthful potential significantly contributed to the decision in his favor. He has been pushing his case for the longest time since the start of the Sri Lanka tour. He was also kept as a reserve bowler. Since he is younger and quicker than both Navdeep Saini and Mukesh Kumar, he has pipped them to the final squad.
