1 2 Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court Bar Association (HCBA) on Tuesday began an indefinite strike in protest against the Supreme Court Collegium 's recommendation to transfer Delhi HC judge Justice Yashwant Varma to Allahabad — his parent high court. Leading the protesting lawyers who gathered at Gate number 3 of the high court, Bar Association president Anil Tiwari said the protest is not against any court or judge but against those who have betrayed the judicial system. "Our fight is against those involved in corruption and against a system that lacks transparency.

For now, our demand is a reconsideration and withdrawal of the transfer order," he said. "Repatriating a judge, who is facing corruption charges to his parent high court is not a punishment but like giving him an award," HCBA said in a statement. It urged the central govt not to clear the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation.

The Association announced that the Photo Affidavit Centre will remain indefinitely closed due to the suspension of judicial work. The Association cautioned that if any oath commissioners or govt advocates continue their duties, it will not oppose any action taken against them. On Monday, HCBA had passed a resolution calling for impeachment of Justice Varma.

The association said Allahabad HC "is not a dumping ground for corrupt and tainted judges". It has urged CJI Sanjiv Khanna to order an FIR against Justice Varma and called for investigations by CBI, ED and other agencies. However, the Allahabad HCBA, which had already vowed to oppose this proposal tooth and nail, decided to go on an indefinite strike starting today as soon as the Collegium's notification was issued.
