Hawken vs. Harvey football: Jordan Johnson powers Hawks to CVC victory

Hawken improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the CVC.

GATES MILLS, Ohio — Jordan Johnson helped to lead the Hawken Hawks to a 20-6 victory over the Harvey Red Raiders in a Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division showdown at Walton Stadium on Friday. The Hawks (8-1, 4-0 CVC), winners of six in a row, improved their chances in hosting a first-round playoff game in the Division III, Region 9. The Hawks will try to win the division as they travel to play Perry, next Friday.

For the Red Raiders (4-5, 1-3), losers of two straight and three out of four, their Region 9 playoff chances are diminishing. The Red Raiders visit Lutheran West next Friday. Johnson, senior two-way player, was a workhorse.



He had 198 yards rushing on 26 carries and the games’ first touchdown. He then sealed the game with an interception with less than a minute to play. “He is a player,” said Hawken head coach Mark Iammarino.

“The offensive line did a great job and giving him and Kenna some running room.” Teammate Kene Obi, a junior, had 35 yards and 11 carries. When the Hawks wanted to throw, Donovan Moorhead had a great night as well.

The junior completed 11 of 12 for 104 yards and two touchdowns. But the main story was the Hawks’ defense. They limited the Red Raiders, who can score in bunches, to 150 yards total offense.

“They really got two great running backs over there, “ said Iammarino, who is coaching in his 29th year. “We did a really good job of playing defense. I’m proud of those guys.

” For the Red Raiders, junior Shahn Alston had 54 yards on 18 carriesand Chris Burt Jr. had 42 yards on eight touches. After a scoreless first quarter, Johnson got the Hawks on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Quarterback Markese Wise called his own number for a 3-yard touchdown run. However, the point-after was missed. The Hawks led 7-6 at the half.

Sophomore Charlie Mallett had a 14-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. But the extra-point was blocked. In the fourth, Tommy Wright, a junior, put the game out of reach with a 12-yard touchdown reception.
