But your choices Tuesday also might determine who'll be running your hometown — so plan your vote accordingly.
The Nov. 5 election is expected to see massive turnout as voters weigh in on whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump should be the nation's top executive. But in Benton, Haughton and Plain Dealing, there are a number of local races on the same ballot, and residents in those towns could choose new aldermen, law enforcement leaders, judges and mayors.
What follows is a breakdown of the races in Bossier Parish and who'll get to cast ballots in them. Races around the parish Aside from the presidential election — which, believe it or not, has a larger pool of candidates than just Harris and Trump — voters across Bossier Parish will have another choice to make for a federal-level office: Do they want to keep State. Rep.
Mike Johnson, who currently represents Louisiana's 4th Congressional District and last year was chosen by fellow Congressional Republicans as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, or swap him out for a relative unknown in challenger Joshua Morott, a substitute teacher? Both candidates are Republicans.
Democrats this year did not field a challenger for the 4th District seat. Those living in Bossier School District 5, which covers an area north of Bossier City, have only one choice for the election to that seat. Republican Logan McConathy, who currently occupies the seat, is running unopposed.
There is only one candidate for the Bossier Justice of the Peace District 4 seat, which represents the north east part of the parish. Sheila Johnson, a Republican, is running unopposed after Chris Maness, a Republican, withdrew from the race. Benton Benton residents will have a choice for who will serve as their next mayor and police chief, though candidates in all but one of its alderman races are unopposed.
Republicans James Friday and Ken Shiflett are running to replace Mayor Shelly Horton. Friday currently serves as the representative for Council District 4. Shiflett is a business owner.
The Chief of Police is an elected position in Benton that is currently occupied by Steve Collier, a Republican who is running for re-election. Mark Crouch, also a Republican, is challenging Collier for his job. The candidates in the uncontested Benton alderman district races include: District 1: Jacqueline Neal Carr, Democrat.
District 3: Tammy Brunson, Republican. District 4: Arshundae Perry, Independent. District 5: Terry Lawrence, Republican.
There are three candidates running for the Alderman District 2 seat: Tiffany Manning, Independent. Chris Redford, No Party. Demetrie Turks, Democrat.
Haughton There are three Republicans running to replace Mayor Kim Gaspard: Klay Harrison, Larkin Tidwell and Hunter Timms. Two Republicans are running for Chief of Police: incumbent Todd Gibson and Richard Wheeler, both Republicans. The nine candidates for the five at-large aldermen seats are: Doug Adams, an incumbent Republican.
Troy Bencke, a Republican. Jordan Chreene, a Republican. Colby Isom, an incumbent Republican.
Matthew Kinney, an Independent. Blake Laliberte, a Republican. Barry McGee Jr.
, an incumbent Republican. Michael Rains, a Republican. Phillip Smith, an incumbent Republican.
Plain Dealing Plain Dealing residents on Tuesday will have choices for who they want to be mayor, but candidates in the town's alderman and marshal races are running unopposed. The mayor's race is between Shavonda Gay, the no-party incumbent; James Cook, a sitting alderman for council District 1; and Sheila Player, a Democrat. Ronnie Murray, the sitting town marshal, is running for his seat unopposed.
Plain Dealing Alderman District 1 has two representatives, one of whom is Cook. Shanithia Gay, the other sitting District 1 alderman, is running for her seat unopposed. There are two candidates for Alderman District 2: Emily Barr Jennings, a Democrat, and Marmekia Akins, a no-party candidate.
