At the start of spring camp, Kyle Whittingham was uncertain about Utah’s wide receiver group. A few weeks later, the Ute head coach thinks one player has emerged as Utah’s No. 1 wide receiver.
“Zacharyus Williams is becoming [the guy],” Whittingham said. “If we had to [say] today, he’s wide receiver one. He’s the guy that’s making the most plays, getting open, running the best routes, catching the football clean.
Here’s a bit of Kyle Whittingham from earlier, with a tidbit on his take about the New York Yankees’ torpedo bats. The main takeaway, though: Zach Williams is emerging as the #Utes WR1 so far through spring camp. pic.
twitter.com/N7YFxqT9DG Williams, a sophomore wide receiver, shined in the Utes’ final game of last season. He clocked six grabs and 72 receiving yards in a win against the UCF Knights, while also carrying the ball three times for 11 yards.
He’s now using that experience to emerge as Utah’s top pass catcher through the spring. “I do believe I had a good game, and I do use that as a confidence booster, but I still have to earn my spot,” Williams said this week. “I’m just doing what the coaches tell me to do, come out here ready to work every day.
That’s about it.” So far, Whittingham has liked what he’s seen. “He is really dangerous after the catch.
That’s one of his main attributes,” the coach said. “He can make some people miss. .
.. He’s also very good on the jet sweeps.
In fact, I’m pretty convinced that, if we had to, he could play running back. I mean, he’s got that natural ability with the ball in his hands.” To start his football career, the Carson, California, native was a running back.
Williams said he’s able to use that experience to see the field better as a playmaker on the outside. “I’ve always had that in my bag as one of my skills, and I’m happy to be back playing in that position, as well,” Williams said. “Playing football, I’m having more fun.
The more positions I play, the more fun I have.” While Utah will have to wait to see Williams’ full production this fall, he is excited to give Utes fans a sneak peek in the upcoming spring game. Not only will they get a look at Williams, but also new quarterback Devon Dampier and the new scheme from offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
“It’s a lot different. Playing style is a lot different,” Williams said. “I just can’t wait for you guys to see.
