Haryana man nabbed for rape, murder of Valsad teen turns out to be serial killer

Surat: The Valsad police on Monday nabbed a 30-year-old Haryana resident, who allegedly raped and killed a 19-year-old college girl near Udvada town on Nov 14. During interrogation, the police found that the accused Rahul alias Bholu Karmvir Ishwar Jat, was a serial killer wanted in at least four other undetected murders executed on trains in Karnataka, West Bengal and Telangana. While walking toward the hotel on Udvada-Pardi Road, he noticed the girl walking near the railway tracks. The victim was returning to her home in Motiwada village, about a kilometer from Udvada station, and speaking on phone with her friend. Rahul followed her, attacked her from behind, and dragged her into a nearby mango orchard where he raped her and strangled her to death.



A forensic post-mortem conducted at Surat's New Civil Hospital confirmed the sexual assault and strangulation as the cause of death. Police recovered a bag, clothes, and other belongings near the crime scene. "The police teams reviewed footage from over 2,000 CCTV cameras across Vapi, Valsad, Surat, and Udvada.

One of the recordings captured a clear image of the suspect. A police officer from Surat's Lajpore Central Jail identified him as Rahul Jat, a known criminal, said Karanraj Vaghela, superintendent of police, Valsad. Using the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) portal, police traced Rahul's extensive criminal history.

‘He was apprehended on Sunday night at the Vapi railway station parking lot in a joint operation by local and railway police. He travelled extensively, slept on railway platforms and kept changing his locations to evade arrest. We have found that he is involved in at least four cases of loot and murder on trains and at railway stations in Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana and Maharashtra," said Vaghela.

In fact, only a day before his arrest, he had looted a woman and murdered her on a train near Secunderabad railway station in Telangana. Police said he was jailed in 2018-19 and 2024 in cases related to truck theft and illegal arms smuggling in Rajasthan, Haryana, UP and Uttarakhand. He looted people whenever he found them alone and raped women, especially in the coaches for differently-abled passengers, and nabbing him was tough since he kept moving and mostly slept at railway platforms and in trains.

Rahul is a native of Mokhra Khas, Pana Shyam village Meham taluka of Rohtak in Haryana.
