Topline Harvey Weinstein on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to committing a criminal sex act, according to multiple outlets , the latest charge in New York against the disgraced Hollywood producer, which was brought in a new grand jury indictment after an earlier conviction was overturned. What To Watch For Weinstein is scheduled to return to court for another hearing on Oct. 2. Prosecutors also have requested the new charge be folded into Weinstein’s retrial on criminal sexual assault and third-degree rape charges.
Judge Chris Farber indicated he would rule whether to do so early next month, according to the Associated Press. A retrial is scheduled for Nov. 12.
Key Background Weinstein has faced allegations from over 100 women of sexual assault, rape, harassment and misconduct over his nearly four decades in Hollywood, helping to jumpstart accusations of sexual misconduct against other powerful people in media and business. The once-prominent Hollywood producer was later indicted on rape and criminal sexual assault charges in 2018 and convicted in 2020. Weinstein—who has maintained his innocence—was also convicted in Los Angeles on similar charges and he faces a 16-year sentence, but his lawyers have argued the trial was unfair as they seek to overturn that conviction.
His New York conviction was overturned earlier this year by an appeals court, which ruled the presiding judge incorrectly allowed other women who accused Weinstein of sexual assault to testify as witnesses. Tangent Weinstein was “ rushed ” to Bellevue Hospital from Rikers Island jail last week “due to several medical conditions” and had a “procedure and surgery on his heart,” his representatives told Forbes. Weinstein has suffered from several health issues, and was previously hospitalized in July for Covid-19 and pneumonia.
