HBO's Harry Potter series has officially announced the actors taking on iconic roles - and fans are already taking to social media with a range of reactions

HBO has officially announced the cast for its upcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation, sparking a flurry of reactions from fans online. The series, confirmed earlier this year, will star John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Luke Thallon is set to play Professor Quirrell, while Paul Whitehouse will step into the role of Argus Filch.

John Lithgow , 79, shared his thoughts on his casting during an interview with ScreenRant. "Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid," he said.

"But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision.

I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes," he added, reports the Express US . As more cast members were revealed, online chatter quickly intensified. Reactions on Reddit and other fan forums ranged from curiosity and support to skepticism.

"Gonna be hard to replace the Hagrid and McGonnagal we grew up with, two of the most perfect castings." "But I'm more excited than I thought I'd be hearing Nick Frost as Hagrid. He's got big shoes to fill (heh) but I'm down," one fan wrote.

"Paul Whitehouse as Filch is just perfect. Simplicity in its finest," one fan gushed. "The reputation of the marauders is about to go into the toilet," another viewer remarked.

"Remember when they said it was going to be a 'book accurate' adaptation? Pepperidge Farm remembers," a user joked. The fan was poking fun at earlier claims regarding the show's adherence to the original novels. While HBO Max has kept mum on who will portray the iconic trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

Fans are eagerly awaiting this announcement, which is expected to drop any day now. Production for the series is slated to kick off this summer. DAILY NEWSLETTER: Sign up here to get the latest news and updates from the Mirror US straight to your inbox with our FREE newsletter.
