Hanwha Ocean showcased a state-of-the-art zero-carbon vessel at the “Gastech 2024” event in Houston, USA, advancing its vision for maritime decarbonization. During the event, Hanwha Ocean held an "LNG Carrier User Forum," targeting shipowners and classification societies, where it unveiled the next-generation zero-carbon propulsion liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, "Ocean 1." The forum was attended by over 100 representatives from the shipbuilding and shipping industries, providing an opportunity to promote Hanwha Ocean's competitive edge in LNG carrier technology and strengthen its order acquisition capabilities.

The "Ocean 1" is designed for complete zero-carbon propulsion, utilizing an ammonia gas turbine-based electric propulsion system, eliminating the need for fossil fuels. The vessel can also operate on LNG and mixed fuels and is flexible enough to integrate future fuel cell and battery technologies. Hanwha Ocean also presented the use of high-manganese steel (MCTIB, LNG fuel tank material).

This technology has been applied to ultra-large crude oil carriers and container ships and, when used as a cargo hold, is expected to reduce boil-off gas (BOG) to enhance transportation efficiency. The forum also presented a vision for commercializing autonomous ships. Introduced were control systems supporting unmanned operation and cargo loading/unloading technologies necessary for implementing fully autonomous ships, smart ship solutions, and digital twin technology.

Hanwha Engine announced a remote engine monitoring system expected to provide information on engine fault detection and parts replacement cycles. This will offer real-time engine condition monitoring by linking with Hanwha Ocean's smart ship solution. Hanwha Power Systems showcased an eco-friendly solution to replace existing fossil fuel engines with ammonia gas turbines, presenting a way to maintain economical operation of existing ships while meeting carbon emission regulations.

“The zero-carbon propulsion LNG carrier unveiled at this forum is an innovative eco-friendly solution leading the industry," said an official from Hanwha Ocean. "We aim to strengthen collaboration with affiliates to establish ourselves as a global leader in marine decarbonization solutions.”.
