Hansi Flick has said that his project at Barcelona is “just starting” but added that he had little interest in signing a long-term contract renewal for the sake of it. Flick signed a two-year contract through to the end of the 2025-26 season upon his appointment as Barca head coach last summer, with his side currently top of La Liga, into the Copa del Rey final and strongly placed to reach the Champions League semi-final stage. “I am not a coach that wants to stay and sign a contract for let’s say three years and stay here with everything sorted,” Flick said when asked on a renewal. “My plan is to do one year, then we speak and see where we are, and go like that. Step by step.

Paso a paso. Not longer than that. In the end, I don’t know how long it will take, but when I finish my job in this club, I want to do it on a good note.

” Flick said of his position: “I enjoy Barcelona, the city, the people, we are happy to live here. I have a lot of energy and thoughts in my head of what we can do to make the team better, but we are just starting this project.” Barca are currently four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga with eight matches remaining, while they will face the capital club in this season’s Copa del Rey final.

Flick’s side will play the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final away at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, having won the first leg 4-0 last week. (JOSEP LAGO/AFP via Getty Images).
