Boxing fans will have a rare Christmas treat as Malawi’s current top talent Hannock ‘Hardknock’ Phiri faces veteran boxer Chikondi Makawa in an eight-round non-title super middleweight contest at Bremat Hall in Lilongwe. Phiri, the challenger, has defied all odds— moving from welterweight to 65 kilogrammes (kg) category to face Makawa at 75kg. Makawa has sent a stern warning to Phiri, threatening to send him into early retirement.

“He has been talking ill about me but time has come for him to meet a real test in boxing. I will shock him,” Makawa said. Phiri said he was not moved.

“I am yet to lose against a local opponent and Makawa does not pose any threat to me,” he said. According to boxrec.com, Phiri, 26, has eight wins including seven knockouts, three defeats and a draw whereas Makawa, 33, has 15 wins including four knockouts, 18 defeats and a draw.

Meanwhile, Malawi National Football Team players are expected to spend their time with family members and friends. Romania-based Flames defender Charles Petro said he was expected to arrive in the country today for the Christmas holiday. “I will be home with my family.

Together with my wife, we will go to the church for prayers and reflect on the successes and challenges encountered this year,” the Botosani midfielder-cum-defender said. Another Flames Chimwemwe Idana said Christmas was time to stay at home with family members or visit relatives. “I arrived in Blantyre some few days ago and my family is very important to me.

During this festive season, we will be together celebrating Christmas,” the Silver Strikers midfielder said. Mozambique – based Flames captain Christopher John Banda advised people to celebrate the birth of Christ responsibly. “A lot happens on Christmas; my advice is that we must celebrate responsibly,” the UD Songo player said.
