Hampton University’s five-game winning streak, the Pirates’ longest in men’s basketball since they joined the CAA, ended with a frustrating 53-52 loss to Drexel before 1,357 in Philadelphia. Jason Drake scored 15 points Thursday night to lead Drexel (16-14, 8-9), and Yame Butler made two free throws for the winning points with 23 seconds left. Drexel’s Cole Hargrove blocked three shots, compiled nine rebounds and scored 12 points, shooting 5 of 5 from the field.
Noah Farrakhan led the Pirates (16-14, 8-9) with 18 points but didn’t get much offensive support as HU shot just 34.4% (21 of 61). Daniel Johnson, Xzavier Long and Etienne Strothers, Wayne Bristol Jr.
added six apiece, the most among Hampton’s other players. Kyrese Mullen was scoreless but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The Pirates led most of the second half by small margins, but two Drake free throws at the 58-second mark, then Butler’s two foul shots after Drexel rebounded a Farrakhan miss, proved decisive.
After a Hampton turnover, Drake missed a free throw and Long got the rebound with four seconds left, but after a timeout, the Pirates came up short on their final shot. Hampton is in a four-way tie for seventh in the Coastal Athletic Association with Drexel, Elon and Northeastern and will get a tournament seed from No. 7 to 10.
Regardless, the Pirates’ first tournament opponent will be one of those three teams. The Pirates close their regular season at No. 1 seed Towson at 4 p.
