Prayagraj : Tension gripped Asauta Lauganpur village and adjoining areas in trans-Yamuna on Sunday following the recovery of the half-burnt body of a 35-year-old Dalit man . The deceased, identified as Devi Shankar , was a resident of Karchhana. As the news spread, hundreds of locals gathered at the spot, demanding action against the culprits.

The irate mob also made an abortive bid to attack the house of one of the accused. Upon being alerted, senior police officials along with forces and forensic experts rushed to the spot. ACP (Karchana) Varun Kumar told TOI that Devi Shankar was called by a group of four people on Saturday night for the transportation of wheat.

The family members alleged that Devi Shankar was burnt to death due to an old enmity, following which the police detained six persons for questioning. The family members claimed that Devi Shankar was called by Dilip Singh and others at around 10:30 pm on Saturday night for the transportation of wheat. They alleged that he was tortured and burnt to death by them.

The ACP said, "We are awaiting the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death." Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Sunday said the murder of a Dalit man in Karchana area of Prayagraj is "extremely sad and worrying". In a post on X in Hindi, she demanded that the govt must take strict action against such "criminal, anti-social and feudal elements running amok in the state and establish the rule of law".

She also wrote that govt should take incidents of disrespect to the statue of Constitution maker Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar seriously and "take strict action against criminals who create tension and violence in the society so that recurrence of such incidents can be stopped". The BSP chief was referring to two recent incidents, one involving the murder of a Dalit man in Itaura village and the second related to tension over removal of an Ambedkar statue in Mawai Khatri village..
