KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly half of the 5,628 vehicles owned by the police, including those used by the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) and the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV), are in poor condition and require replacement.Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) director Datuk Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said some of these vehicles had been in use for more than nine years. The affected units comprised approximately 3,958 URB motorcycles and 1,670 patrol vehicles.

"Of the 3,958 URB motorcycles, about 50 per cent are in poor condition as they have been in service for nine years."This includes 948 units supplied in 2012, 196 units in 2015, and 2,814 units in 2017," he told Utusan Malaysia.MPV and URB units are among the police's frontline assets, operating around the clock to ensure public safety.

Wan Hassan said that out of the total MPV fleet, 1,561 units were leased from Spanco Sdn Bhd, while the remaining 109 were owned by the police."The leased MPVs are replaced every five years."In June, 600 MPVs will be replaced as their lease term expires.

However, 109 MPVs owned by the force are over 10 years old, and 30 per cent of them have been deemed unfit for use," he said.He added that JPJKK was currently conducting a review for a replacement application."Despite budget constraints and shortages of spare parts, I have instructed all JPJKK divisions in every contingent and district to conduct three-tier inspections to ensure that all assets are safe and fully operational for patrol duties.

"This process involves monitoring each vehicle used by URB and MPV personnel, he said.Regarding reports of URB motorcycles with worn-out tyres, Wan Hassan said action had been taken."We are aware of the matter, and JPJKK has taken prompt action by replacing the tyres to ensure the vehicles remain safe and meet operational standards," he said.
