How disappointing to find that Brighton and Hove City Council flies in the face of a welcome national health trend. A report by UKActive shows that the number of people who use a gym has reached 11.5 million, a rise of 1.
6 million, which means that one in six of the population does so. What's more, gyms are more popular among rising generations than pubs as a social centre. Mutual health tips, sometimes leavened with good humour, make gyms a tremendous phenomenon: democracy in action.
Perhaps the best of those in this area is the great bargain that is FitLab - previously called Cheetahs - which is a substantial part of Hove's King Alfred. And yet the council proposes to closes this down. How disingenuous of the council to claim that smaller premises, with fewer and less substantial items, will be adequate replacement for this admirable enterprise.
We cannot sit by and let FitLab - a part of the scene since 1963 - be driven out of town by a flabby council. Christopher Hawtree Westbourne Gardens Hove.
