The GWS Giants have openly laughed at Collingwood after it was revealed by 7NEWS that the Magpies wanted out of the AFL’s Opening Round . On Wednesday night, 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary exclusively revealed that the Magpies — who have played the Giants twice in Opening Round and lost both times — did not want to take part in the fixture , which only features four games across New South Wales and Queensland and is a lead in to Round 1. Hawthorn and Collingwood featured in the fixture this year, and last year Melbourne, Carlton, Richmond and Collingwood played against their northern state rivals. Cleary said on Wednesday that Collingwood was “done” with the round and — ahead of a crucial meeting of club chief executives in Round 5 — had told the AFL to get another team.

But the Giants have found it all highly amusing, given their limited access to the MCG and their heavy travel itinerary throughout the season. Their first response to Cleary’s story was to react on social media with three laughing emojis. They then turned to music mega-star Michael Bublé and posted a clip of him singing his hit song Home, in a live performance with Blake Shelton in 2008.

“Collingwood after their annual trip interstate,” the Giants said on social media. But the Giants weren’t done there. On Thursday morning they decided to have another crack, this time tagging in the AFL.

“If the AFL is taking requests now, both us and the Gold Coast SUNS would like to play more than once a season at the MCG, thanks,” they said on X (formerly Twitter). More to come ..
