The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has applauded the remarkable resilience of Nigerian champions Edo Queens following their dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns. The thrilling encounter, held in Morocco on Saturday night, secured Edo Queens a spot in the semi-finals of the CAF Women’s Champions League. Edo Queens, who only claimed their maiden Nigerian league title last season, have enjoyed a stellar run.

After clinching the WAFU B Women’s Champions League title in Côte d’Ivoire, they have now cemented their place among Africa’s elite in the prestigious continental tournament. Speaking on the team’s achievement, Gusau praised their determination and fighting spirit. “The NFF and the entire Nigerian football community are proud of Edo Queens’ achievements, from their WAFU B triumph to their impressive performance in the CAF Women’s Champions League,” he said.

“The team’s victory over the defending champions highlights the Nigerian spirit of resilience, determination, and ambition. We believe they have the potential to go all the way and lift the trophy.” The defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, initially took the lead in the 24th minute through Melinda Kgadiete and maintained their advantage until added time.

However, Edo Queens showcased extraordinary determination, equalizing in the 95th minute when Emem Essien capitalized on a goalkeeper’s error to slot home. Just five minutes later, Mary Mamudu sealed the win with a thunderous strike into the roof of the net after an assist from Super Falcons forward Goodness Osigwe. The victory not only eliminated Sundowns but also secured Edo Queens’ position as Group B leaders.

Edo Queens will now face DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in the semi-finals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Moroccan time.

The second semi-final will feature AS FAR of Morocco against Egypt’s Masar FC later that evening. In their journey so far, Edo Queens have displayed consistency, defeating Commercial Bank of Ethiopia 3-0 and holding Masar FC of Egypt to a 0-0 draw in their group stage matches. As the Nigerian champions aim for continental glory, the entire nation rallies behind them, hoping for a historic triumph.
