The latest application (24/05785/FU) has been submitted for “importation and processing of inert construction and excavation waste materials for the export of recycled aggregates and site restoration”. Residents can view and comment on the application on Leeds City Council’s Planning Portal. Following a request from Cllrs Thomson, Edwards and Leighton, the deadline for comments and objections has been extended to Tuesday, December 17.
They have also asked that the application be referred to the South and West Plans Panel, which if approved would mean that a panel of councillors, advised and supported by council officers, would assess the application at a public meeting. The Councillors said: “Like many people locally, we love our shared green spaces and are concerned about the potential impact of this application. Many residents have expressed their worries to us and it is vital that the voices and needs of local communities and our precious green spaces are put first.
We continue to push for a positive relationship between the Quarry working within permissions and local communities.” Previous applications in 2022 to extend the hard surface entrance to the quarry using an agricultural entrance, to allow for the recycling of waste on site and to increase the amount of waste stored were refused on the grounds of unacceptable impact on the Green Belt. A breach of conditions notice is currently in place with respect to the import, processing and storage of materials.
The councillors added: "The application appears to be an attempt to seek permission for what is currently unauthorised activity as the previous request to recycle, store and export materials on site was refused by Leeds City Council and also dismissed on appeal." Residents can now comment online without their personal details being publicly visible. This application (24/05785/FU) can be viewed at https://www.
leeds.gov.uk/planning/planning-permission/view-and-comment-on-planning-applications .
Residents can also comment in writing (giving their name, address and quoting the planning application reference) to Planning Services, Leeds City Council, Merrion House, Leeds, LS2 8BB before the deadline of Tuesday, December 17. Cllrs Thomson, Edwards and Leighton are in regular contact with local resident groups in Hawksworth and Guiseley as well as the Minerals and Waste Planning Authority at Leeds City Council on issues relating to the quarry operations and their impact on residents. The Minerals and Waste Planning Authority sends out a community email update on all the planning issues relating to the quarry, which residents can request to be added to.
