1 2 Prayagraj: The authorities of groundwater department have launched an extensive awareness campaign among citizens to conserve water ahead of the upcoming summer season. Entire urban pockets of Sangam city, including posh colonies, are categorised as overexploited. The groundwater department, in its assessment report, also claimed that two blocks of the district – Chaka and Sahson – are under the critical category, while eight blocks, including Bahadurpur, Kaurihar, Saidabad, Mauaima, Phulpur, Pratappur, Dhanupur and Shringverpur Dham are categorised as semi-critical.
Moreover, the remaining 13 blocks, including Holagarh, Soraon, Baharia, Jasra, Shankargarh, Karchana, Kaudhiyara, Urwa, Meja, Koraon, Manda, Handia and Bhagwatpur, are safe. Prayagraj has 23 blocks in the district. Similarly, four blocks of the neighbouring Pratapgarh district, including Mandata, Sadar, Shivgrah, and Sandwa Chandika, have been categorised as critical.
Seven other blocks, including Lalganj, Gaura, Baba Belkhar Nath, Patti, Sangramgarh, Lakshamanpur, and Mangaraura, have also been placed under the semi-critical category. Only four blocks of Pratapgarh district, including Babaganj, Bihar, Kalanker and Sangaipur are in the safe category. In Kaushambi district, one of the blocks, including Chail is in the over-exploited category, while Manjhanpur is in the semi-critical category.
Hydrologist of the groundwater department, Archana Singh says, "After assessing the alarming situation in urban pockets of district in view of the over-exploiting category, the department has taken up a campaign among the masses, appealing them to take an oath to conserve water." She adds, "Efforts are underway to check the overexploitation of groundwater; otherwise. Soaring temperatures, rising population, and the ever-expanding city limits are prime factors that have taken a toll on the groundwater levels.
This has resulted in a major decline in level of groundwater across the region in the past couple of years" . The majority of the urban population, including newly added areas, solely rely on groundwater. There are 285 borewell registered users like hotels, housing colonies, education centres, etc.
