The £11m funding boost to revamp Greyfriars has been welcomed as another vote of confidence in which is now one of the most exciting locations in the country. That is the view of the city’s chamber of commerce which is extremely pleased with the recent confirmation of levelling up funding. The new Labour Government has confirmed it is granting the £11m which was previously promised by the Conservatives for its bold new vision for a vibrant garden quarter in the heart of the city.

Council leaders can now go ahead and prepare work on the proposals after the budget announcement that Gloucester will receive funding for it. However, it is understood the bulk of council's work on the design and plans for the regeneration of Greyfriars will not begin until December which is when their new head of place takes up the post. The new Greyfriars Quarter will mean a complete revamp of the area around complementing the massive multi-million-pound regeneration currently taking place right across the city.

The proposals will see part of the shopping centre including the market hall, given an overhaul and repurposed with spaces set aside for community activities, a new market and food hall, as well as a park and gardens, all set within the grounds of the 13th century Greyfriars monastery. Luke Lutman, president of Gloucester Chamber of Commerce, said: “The city and the businesses in it have been waiting for a decision to be made on this for most of the year. “Now that the has finally announced that the funding is going ahead on this project, plans can be put in motion for the redevelopment for this important site.

“This is another vote of confidence for Gloucester adding to the list of achievements and developments already brimming over in the city with many more on the horizon. “Gloucester is now one of the most exciting locations in the country with huge opportunities coming thick and fast.".
