Green Wave wins key match against Swamp Foxes

The Summerville Girls moved into first place for Region 7-AAAAA last week with a pair of key wins on the volleyball courts. The Green Wave became the only team in the region without a region loss Sept. 19 with a win over cross-town rival Ashley Ridge.

Summerville improved to 9-4 with a 3-0 mark in region matches while Ashley Ridge dropped to 8-5-1 and 2-1. “We haven’t beat them since my sophomore year so to win this match as a senior is super nice and exciting,” Summerville co-captain Lily Parker said. “We came out confident and that showed in the first set.



Our mental game was strong tonight and we were able to pull through three tight sets after that.” The Green Wave came out strong on its home court and won the first set 25-13. They followed with a 25-22 win and then fell 25-20 to the Swamp Foxes in the third set.

Summerville clinched the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth. Summerville and Ashley Ridge have been the top two teams in their region the last several seasons. Last year, the Swamp Foxes swept the Green Wave to claim the region title outright.

The two years before, Summerville and Ashley Ridge split their matches and shared the region title. This season, James Island joined the region. During a Sept.

17 match on the road, Summerville claimed a 3-1 victory to hand the Trojans their first region loss of the year. Up next for the Green Wave is a home match against West Ashley Sept. 24 and a match at Fort Dorchester Sept.

26. Summerville will also play in the Eastside Invitational tournament Sept. 28.

Ashley Ridge will host James Island Sept. 24 and West Ashley Sept. 26.
